The fourth season of Mad Men is underway, and you can’t swing a cat without hitting a reference to the ridiculously popular AMC show. Personally, I’ve never seen it. I knew I was missing out on a pop culture phenomenon, but I didn’t realize until recently how much I’m not learning from Don Draper & Co.
Whether it’s your personal life, your work, your role as a parent, or your unquenchable curiosity about Sarah Palin, Mad Men is, apparently, your best path to enlightenment:
Let’s start with the fairly obvious: Need tips on picking up women? A history lesson?
How about some general life lessons? According to Esquire, the show is “rife” with them.
Or maybe you need to discover your core values. Or what Mad Men can teach us about ourselves. If that’s not enough, there’s a whole book on Mad Men and philosophy.
If you’re tired of being told what to do, not to worry; the show can also teach you what not to do.
Once you’ve tackled the personal and metaphysical realms, it’s time to discover what Mad Men can do for you in the workplace:
Need management lessons? Here ya go. Advertising lessons? Look no further. Fundraising? Yep. Marketing tips? You’re covered. Actually, make that a double.
Perhaps you’re thinking, “Yeah, but what can Mad Men teach me about food policy? or, say, childhood masturbation?”
I thought you’d never ask.
Of course, much like the New York Times using the word ‘hipster’ a little too liberally, the reason we’re all writing about Don and crew is because people are searching for him. More traffic = better organic search results = more business. I’m a copywriter and the 9th most popular search that leads people to my site is “Don Draper”.
So the real lesson we’re all learning is when it comes to blogging, sometimes it’s best to give the people they want (although niche blogging is good, too).
Thanks for the post – and the link!
