Composer George Shaw’s brilliant mash up of Star Wars & Disney is the best thing you’ll see all day!
I never understood how great both franchises would work together until I beheld Star Wars: The Musical! This fan film answers the question all Star Wars & Disney geeks have secretly thought since Disney bought Lucasfilm: What if Star Wars was a Disney Musical? Star Wars: The Musical Executive Producer, Music & Lyrics by GEORGE SHAW Directed by JEFFREY GEE CHIN was a product of a year and a half of work when a group of dedicated fans and film professionals came together to create the ultimate love letter to their favorite fandoms. The short film was shot entirely on green screen with multi-planer hand painted backdrops in the Disney animated tradition. I dare any fan not to chuckle when Ben Kenobi and Luke sing the duet “A Jedi World” to the tune of Aladdin’s Oscar winning “A Whole New World” or Vader’s awesome ballad “When You Bow Before The Sith” sung to Disney’s classic “When You Wish Upon A Star“.
Composer Shaw explains the impetus for his project:
As a composer, songwriter, and geek, I grew up LOVING Star Wars and Disney music. I was addicted to the tunes of John Williams and Alan Menken. My passion for their music is what lead me to become a professional composer, and why I have such a passion to create this mashup of Star Wars with Disney Musicals.
As a working composer, I have co-written a song with Marvel legend Stan Lee, composed for Will Wheaton’s Tabletop on Geek & Sundry, composed for the Geekie Awards, and collaborated with a slew of YouTube creators who’ve featured my music in videos that have amassed over 150 million views.
With the approaching release of Star Wars Ep VII: The Force Awakens, we couldn’t be more excited to see the continuation of the Star Wars saga, but when the announcement first came in 2012 that Disney was purchasing Lucasfilm, I couldn’t believe the 2 things that I loved since childhood were coming together!
Unable to contain my excitement, I spent nearly 2 years creating my vision of a humorous mashup of the two worlds in a fan film titled Star Wars: The Musical. Along the way, I assembled an amazing team of passionate and talented collaborators to help me complete the parody of Episode 4: A New Hope as a musical. Our team included an award-winning director, producers who are America’s youngest multiple award winning novelists, a Disney Imagineer, the colorist of the special edition and prequel Star Wars trilogies, matte painter on James Cameron’s Avatar, a Mad TV actor, and a broadway actress/singer who can be seen in the Oscar nominated Selma and recent Magic Mike XXL.
