Alex Yarde reviews the new Dyson Pure Cool (AM11) Purifier Fan
I recently reviewed Dyson AM09 Fan Heater that was both a cool fan and space heater that worked equally well as both. The new Dyson Pure Cool is an air purifier that continues the Dyson tradition of slick builds off the best elements of prior machines, constructed with the highest quality and beautiful design. It’s identical to Dyson’s other fan towers save for the cylindrical 360 degree glass HEPA filter around the base, a big brother of the AM09.
The just released Dyson Pure Cool is the latest salvo in Dyson’s War On Dirt! Particularly, ultra fine airborne particles — including viruses, bacteria and pollens — that are as tiny as 0.3 microns. Dyson Pure Cool is feature loaded, efficient and if you are a hay fever or allergy sufferer like myself, offers much needed relief.
My basic considerations for products like these are safety, features, output, usability & price
Safety: My curious children are still safe. The Dyson Pure Cool has NO visible moving parts; you can easily wipe the loop amplifier clean with a damp cloth. If any of the air inlet holes get blocked (hasn’t happened yet) just use a soft brush according to the users manual.
Features: The Dyson Pure Cool has a very compact, attractive ergonomic modern design. Quiet Mark accreditation means it let’s you sleep peacefully. It comes with a slick magnetic remote that fits atop the unit. It’s about waist height (I’m 6’4) & weighs about 8 pounds. The Dyson Pure Cool uses a high efficiency 360 glass HEPA filter to capture ultra fine particles. Dyson claims it put the Pure Cool to the test with cigarette-smoke-enveloped rooms and performance of the activated carbon granule filters and powerful DC motor did the job. I don’t doubt it. I tried my own tests cooking dinner in my kitchen with my home HVAC system shut off, windows closed and to the Pure Cool’s credit what smells remained in the kitchen got zapped and didn’t permeate the house as expected.
It’s crafted from the same tough thermoplastic used in police riot helmets so it will take a beating from the solid base to center air multiplying oval. It has an easily set sleep timer making it ideal for nighttime use. It’s also a very interesting looking machine. The black/nickel unit I tested could fit anyone’s office or home décor.
Output: If you live in an area where air quality is poor when you get smog alert to stay indoors unless you have an air purifying system you are still going to suffer. According to Dyson,
“The problem is microscopic particles suspended in the atmosphere. When we breathe them in, they cluster on the lining of the lungs. Ultra fine particles can travel even further into the lungs – their small size meaning they can collect in the smaller branches and gas exchange regions of the lungs. They’ve been linked to respiratory problems, heart attacks, and even skin aging.”
The large loop amplifier cranks huge volumes of purified air, channeled through tiny apertures within. Like their line of vacuums this Air Amplifier technology is efficient and powerful. The company claims that their borosilicate microfiber filter removes 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, and it’s good for six months of continuous use. Typical use of 12 hours a day, depending upon how polluted your air is you’d only replace the filter only once a year! Dyson wisely chose to launch the Pure Cool in Beijing where local air quality is a huge concern.
On top of being a high quality air purifier, the Dyson Pure Cool at the push of a button is an amazingly powerful cooling fan. I could feel a strong blast of air from the patented air multiplier more than 30 feet away! The massive volumes of air the Dyson Pure Cool moves around cooled my rooms evenly and gave me a cool, bug free BBQ on my large outdoor deck. I’ve been using the Dyson Pure Cool continuously for about a week indoors now and Fall is a big allergy season for me, especially evenings. So far so good!
Usability: Easy to assemble (put the filter on the base and snap the loop amplifier in place) the layout on the remote is clear and the operating manual has easy to follow pictures with bilingual Spanish and English text. It’s simple and straightforward. You can change the filter in 60 seconds.
Price: $399.99 isn’t cheap but it’s not as expensive as some units I’ve researched that have higher maintenance and less efficiency. This is the air you breathe after all and the two year manufacture parts and labor warranty is a definite plus for such an investment. You really can’t get a better value for such a high quality air purifier today.
Bottom line: The Dyson Pure Cool is a quiet, safe, user friendly zero maintenance air purifier with a glass HEPA filter that has top of the line two years customer warranty for parts and labor. This energy efficient and powerful unit performed extremely well and it looks like a piece of art. This is a year round device for any family. Particularly if you live in an area with poor air quality or you or your family members suffer from air borne allergens this unit, in my opinion, is a very wise investment.
