On it’s 35th anniversary Gundam anime fan Casval Deikun & Alex Yarde need your help to reintroduce Gundam in the US.
Mobile Suit Gundam is a popular Japanese long running animated science fiction space saga, with numerous sequels and spin-offs. Set in the futuristic world known as Universal Century 0079, the plot focuses on the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation with the latter unveiling a new mecha known as the RX-78-2 Gundam piloted by the young mechanic Amuro Ray. The series is famous for revolutionizing the mecha genre due to the handling of the mobile suits as weapons of war as well as the portrayal of its young pilots as soldiers boasting a rich mythology rivaling popular western science fiction mythologies like Star Wars and Star Trek.
Gundam was first introduced to the west well over two decades ago near the end of its initial runs overseas and to this day, is still one of the most beloved and longest running Japanese anime series ever. The series gained popularity with western audiences due to the introduction of Bandai’s Gunpla models in 1980 and from reruns and the theatrical releases of the anime in the west, leading to the creation of a prolific and lucrative media and toy franchise.
Now at it’s 35th anniversary this week Gundam has returned to focus on the bulk of its story content in the Universal Century timeline with “Gundam Unicorn”, “Gundam The Origin: I” and”Reconguista in G” nearing completion. Sunrise has announced efforts to increase sales in Cenrtal Asia so why not have similar reboot efforts in the Americas and Europe? In and effort to show show Sunrise and Bandai (the license holders and producers) that there are still many western Gundam fans and encourage FUNimation to jump on the western distribution licenses. I encourage you to read and sign the online petition.
