A comedy that makes fun of itself, but in a good way.
This is one of the best comedies I have seen in many years!
When I saw the trailers for this movie, I was unsure if it was going to be a good film or not. The first film was not only clever but very funny, and I hoped this film would be the same way. When a sequel is made, there is always the risk of it either bombing or just not being as good as the original, and this can easily happen with a comedy. I am glad to say that this is not only a good film, but that it is better in every way.
The film begins pretty much right where the last film left off, with Jenko and Schmidt going off to college, but not in the way you would think. They are taking online classes to try to find decoded messages in teachers’ lectures. So in the beginning it isn’t the experience we were promised. These two cops get a lead and head off to a pier to make a bust, or so they think. The whole thing turns into a fiasco where not only the crooks get away, but their car gets destroyed and they cause a lot of damage.
Deputy Chief Hardy, their boss, is furious but not surprised this happened. He says the reason this happened is because they were not doing the same thing that they did last time. So their new assignment is to do just that. But the church they went to last time was bought back by the Koreans, so this time they have moved across the street to 22 Jump Street. Their facility is nicer than last time, and their budget is bigger.
Their task this time is to go to MC State and find out all they can about a new drug called WhyPhy. Their task is the same as it was last time: to find the drug and find the supplier so this doesn’t spread to every campus in America. But this time Jenko is popular: he is playing football and making a bunch of new friends. Schmidt tries to fit in, but he just isn’t comfortable there. So not only are they trying to find this new drug, but they also have to deal with their own difficulties. Will they be able to find the supplier? And is it possible to stop production before it is too late?
Jonah Hill is back as Morton Schmidt, Channing Tatum returns as Greg Jenko, Ice Cube again plays Captain Dickinson, Nick Offerman again plays Deputy Chief Hardy, Dave Franco plays Eric Molson again, and Rob Riggle returns as Mr. Walters. The film also features newcomers Peter Stormare as Ghost, Amber Stevens as Maya Dickinson, Jillian Bell as Mercedes, and Wyatt Russell as Zook.
This was a very clever film. It does start a bit slow at first, but once Jenko and Schmidt get their new assignment the film really gets going. There is also a scene where they both end up taking the new drug by mistake, and it not only has special effects but is very funny to see how they both react in such different ways. It was an interesting twist to have Jenko and Schmidt have to deal with some issues as partners, something that just wasn’t seen in the last movie. It makes this film different, because it isn’t just some non-stop comedy, but it also makes you sympathize with these two characters.
It was also nice to see Hill and Tatum work together again, and it was clear they had a blast making this movie. Their chemistry on screen is wonderful, and I could tell Ice Cube was glad to be back making another one of these films. Even though the task is much harder this time, in the end Jenko and Schmidt find a way to complete their assignment and are better people once it is all over.
If you enjoyed 21 Jump Street, you definitely should see this movie. If you are looking for a good comedy to have a bunch of laughs, this is the film you should see. The comedy in this film isn’t dirty of grotesque, it is clever and hard not to laugh at.
So far this film has made $60 million in the US alone, and it got the #1 spot this weekend.
This is a movie that is worth seeing more than once, and is good to see on a date or with a group of friends. Check it out, it will definitely be worth it.
