Criminal shows everyone can have a second chance no matter how bad they may be
I was not sure what to think when I went in to see Criminal. It looks like a peculiar movie that has a good cast that are trying to tell a difficult, sometimes hard to believe story. Yet I was intrigued and decided to give Criminal a shot. After seeing it there is more happening here than it may seem by the trailers. I was able to see Criminal last week and here is what I thought of it.
Read the plot of Criminal below:
CIA agent Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds) is killed while traveling to a secret location to meet a hacker who he is trying to protect from a dangerous madman. Desperate to find his whereabouts, officials turn to an experimental neurosurgeon named Dr. Franks (Tommy Lee Jones) who claims can transfer memories from one brain to another. The guinea pig for the procedure is Jerico Stewart (Kevin Costner), a violent and dangerous death-row inmate. Now gifted with Pope’s skills and knowledge, Stewart must race against time to stop a sinister international conspiracy.
Criminal is a pretty interesting movie. The cast would appear to be a strange choice but they all find a way to work together and make something pretty good. There are some amazing transformations that happen with the characters in this movie, even though none of them want it to happen at first. Thanks to experimental science though that is exactly what happens and it is a pleasure to see it unfold. There is a good amount of violence which may be too much for some viewers but in the end it is a movie that is unique and clever.
Criminal gets 7/10. I ended up liking this movie more than expected but it wasn’t perfect. Gary Oldman plays an odd character here who most of the time seems to have little to no idea what to do next and it just isn’t a good fit for him. It was also strange to see a villain who was so evil that it didn’t come off as believable and therefore made the character more ridiculous than scary. Kevin Costner is the surely the one who makes this a good film but it takes a while for the character to grow into who he needs to be to save everyone. Yet for those who can be patient and give this film an honest chance they shouldn’t be disappointed by it.
If you are in the mood for a good action/thriller then this is the movie for you. If you like Kevin Costner this is not a film you should miss. Criminal comes out this Friday.
