Green Room is a thriller that only some people will truly enjoy
The thriller is a hit or miss genre of movies. Some of them are going to be amazing and others can easily fall flat but most of the time they do get a sort of following. Silence of the Lambs, Seven and The Last House on the Left are just a few movies to fall into this genre. Green Room is definitely a different type of thriller that stars Patrick Stewart in a role unlike anything fans have seen him play before. I was able to see it last week and here is what I thought of it.
See the Green Room synopsis below:
“Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon. What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see. Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the clubs depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Patrick Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise. But while Darcy and his henchmen think they band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves more cunning and and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown.”‘
Green Room is not a horrible movie, but it has some flaws. The movie is slow paced, very much so at some moments. This causes the movie to not always be that exciting and can even confuse some people as to exactly what is going on in this movie. That is the next problem, that Green Room takes a long time to explain what is really going on, who the bad guys are and just how much danger this punk rock group is really in. There is also a ton of things going on, and that makes it not easy to follow at times what is happening or why it matters in the narrative this film is trying to weave. Yet on the plus side Patrick Stewart plays an amazing bad guy and is honestly the best thing about Green Room. The rest of the cast does their best but most of them fall flat. It is kind of neat to see this small time band give a good fight and prove how strong a survival instinct can be when put into a dangerous, bad situation. Overall Green Room is okay movie but one that is not that scary and uses gore in a way that is only meant to shock people yet doesn’t always achieve this goal.
I give Green Room 5/10. I personally did not hate this movie, but it could have been much better. The story line starts off real slow and takes a long time to get to the point and sadly once it does it has a hard time keeping the momentum going. Patrick Stewart is wonderful here but sadly his performance alone is not enough to make this a great movie. Sadly it is a movie that doesn’t thrill much and therefore most people won’t feel bad missing out on this movie. You can learn more about this film on its website here.
If you are a fan of Patrick Stewart you may want to check his newest film out. If you are looking for a simple thriller you may like this picture. If you don’t fit into either of these categories though it would be best to skip this one. Green Room comes out this Friday.
