Dancing with the stars helps dads stay hip — Jessica Lahitou shows us how.
____
Perhaps you have a wife, daughter, girlfriend, mother, roommate, or other live-in relation, who is a ballroom dance enthusiast.
And perhaps you too have found another reason to face Mondays with reluctance. Where before there was Monday night football, behold! It’s now Monday night in a sparkling ballroom with spray-tanned, smiling couples looking digitally remastered for real-time photoshop.
My husband has been subjected to this mirror-ball mania for the better part of four years. It’s only getting worse now that our daughter is old enough to beg for “Dancers! Dancers!” when Monday night rolls around.
And so, I’ve compiled the following list of reasons why sitting down for some celebrities lighting up the dance floor is actually a good way to spend your man hours.
- DWTS will help the busy Dad stay hip with trends.
Don’t know who Hayes Grier is? I bet your teenage daughter does. And you would too, if you watched Dancing with the Stars. Major Dad Points.
- Same goes for pop music
Are you the indie dad who thinks Fleet Foxes or Depeche Mode count as cool? Good for you. Your kids don’t. So guess what is here to get you up to speed? DWTS. Last season brought Andy Grammer and Flo Rida to the stage. Who knows what Top Forty hits await this season?
If you watch, you will.
- Score major points with the lady of your life
Would you like to go golfing this weekend? Take that guys trip to Vegas? If you can describe the difference between the Tango and the Argentine Tango, my guess is you’ll be much likelier to get that goal.
- Still satisfy that cathartic need to yell at a bad call
Well, technically the DWTS judges aren’t refs. But they do regularly garner boos from the live audience, and there have been several occasions in our home of collective naysaying towards those score paddles.
- You might just be inspired to take a huge risk
When football players wear glitter, and rock legends don eye liner, when grown military men shed tears live on television in front of millions, you may very well feel a sudden surge of inspiration. What are your dreams, dear dad? If these men can do that, what could possibly hold you back?
I hope this helps men everywhere give up football and find the love for Dancing with the Stars.

Personally I’m a fan of playing “What the Hell will Gary Busey Say Next?”
