Jay Snook reviews the latest ‘Hunger Games’ and finds change and growth for Peeta and Katniss. Is change Always a good thing?
—
Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have evolved through the first Hunger Games movies. They have been through two Hunger Games, and became the first dual victors in any game in the history of Panem. They are both from District 13, and are required to be in another consecutive Hunger Game right after their victory tour in the Districts. This game was like no other; it had all of the victors from the previous games. There was also going to be more dangers and traps than ever before thanks to the new game maker. After these games came to a surprise end, Peeta and Katniss were separated and both of them were injured. Now things are getting bad, with the capitol trying to keep order and a rebellion beginning to loom on the horizon.
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 continues pretty much after the end of Catching Fire. Katniss ends up in an underground city beneath Panem, and Peeta is believed to be dead. The capitol is not sure what to do next, and District 13 has been wiped away completely. The future looks grim to everyone. Katniss wants to help with the rebellion, but she is not sure if she can do it. There are not many options, with the Capitol wanting to quell this new threat at all costs thanks to many efforts by President Snow. People continue to die, and the risks to victory seem too great. When Katniss sees Peeta on a broadcast, she is shocked to find out he is alive. The difficulty is that he is siding with the Capitol. With the battle lines drawn, it is hard to say what will happen. Will Katniss be able to help the rebellion’s cause? Will she ever be able to save Peeta? How many lives will have to be lost in the process?
Jennifer Lawrence is wonderful as Katniss Everdeen. She brings a lot of emotion to this character, and she has changed immensely since the last film. She has some trauma going on, but she is also stronger than before. She is reunited with her family and for now they are safe. She is the rock that holds this film together. No one else could bring Katniss to life like she does. A great role model for teens and women, to show them that they are strong and able to accomplish anything. Donald Sutherland returns as President Snow. He is a really despicable man, one who only wants to keep his power, and be damned what happens to people along the way. He proves that his is pure evil. One of the greatest villains I have seen in a good while in a movie.
Josh Hutcherson again plays Peeta Mellark. His role has evolved since the last film, he is not the boy viewers have grown to love. He is becoming a man, but not the type you may expect. He also is not the same since the last film, but in many different ways than Katniss. It seems like he is better off, but keep an eye on him. Josh does a great job of bringing the emotion and multiple layers of this character’s personality to the screen. His character brings some interesting twists, but I refuse to spoil them for you here. This is one of the best performances I have seen from him, and I am eager to see what happens to him in the next film.
This film did pretty well this past weekend earning the #1 spot and making $123 million. This film received decent reviews from audiences, but critics were not so kind to it. It didn’t make as much as the other two films, but there are no big films coming out for many weeks. I think it will do well with its huge fan base, but time will tell.
If you were a fan of Hunger Games or Catching Fire, you must go see this movie. If you are looking for a good Sci-Fi film to watch, this is the film for you. It has some wonderful songs in it, and some scenes that will truly move you. Go see this movie with a date or with your friends, you will be thankful that you did.
