Money Monster is all about one person who loses a lot of money fast and their search for answers
Everyone enjoys having money. Many would say it is what makes the world go round. There are plenty of talk shows on how to make a quick buck and ways to get rich easy. In Money Monster there exists such a program that airs daily and its goal is to give its audience inside tricks and secrets to make loads of money. I was able to see Money Monster this week and here is what I thought of it.
You can see the plot for Money Monster below:
‘Lee Gates (George Clooney) is a Wall Street guru who picks hot stocks as host of the television show “Money Monster.” Suddenly, during a live broadcast, disgruntled investor Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) storms onto the set and takes Gates hostage. He tells Lee that he lost everything on one of his tips. As Gates tries to plead with Kyle, he’s also using an earpiece to communicate with his longtime producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) in the control room. Together, they must figure out a way to defuse the situation and disarm the angry young man.’
I wanted to like Money Monster but I had a few issues with it. The story is clever but it comes off with too much dry humor that I just didn’t find funny. There are also many scenes that happened that made no sense to the story and drag the film down. There are also a few scenes that wanted to be full of tension and thrills but never felt that way to me. Clooney and Roberts are a good team and find a way to move the movie along to an intriguing conclusion that isn’t easy to see coming. In the end it is a movie that will feel familiar to some movie goers but has a few things that raise it from terrible to not awful in my book. Money Monster gets 5/10. It was not a movie I hated but it wasn’t exciting either. The film tried way too hard to be funny and fell on deaf ears with me, I don’t think I laughed much at all. I enjoyed the performances and the plot is alright. That is the films undoing, it overall comes off as only okay. It was a movie that has the potential to be wonderful yet this is not how the movie turned out. It is a story that has been told many ways before and eventhough this one tries to be different instead it comes off as cheap and like something you would see on HBO or maybe a made for TV movie.
If you like any of these stars this is a movie you may want to see. For those in the mood for simple thriller this is the movie for you. Yet if you want to see an amazing movie it is best to skip this one. Money Monster comes out this Friday.
