Now You See Me 2 is an okay sequel but is missing the twists and surprises that made the first film wonderful
I was really surprised when I saw Now You See Me. I ended up seeing it with on a whim and had low hopes for it. Once it was all over I was not only glad to have seen it but I was thoroughly impressed. The movie was full of amazing magic and had an ending that blew me away. It made a ton of money at the box office so a sequel was destined to happen. You can read my review of the Now You See Me 2 teaser by clicking on the link. I was able to see Now You See Me 2 last week and here is what I thought of it.
You can read the plot for Now You See Me 2 below:
“One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last, unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all.”
I liked Now You See Me 2, but it was not great. There are a number of reasons why. The newest Horseman Lula (Lizzy Caplan) feels out of place with the rest of the group and sadly most of the time she only drags the film down. The rest of the cast is not bad but they too are missing the intrigue that made the first movie special. Maybe it was because there were little secrets left unlike the last film where no one knew what was going on or what was going to happen until the final minutes. Now You See Me 2 is by no means awful I just think it had the impossible task of being better than the first one but there was no way this could actually be achieved. It still has its share of surprises and there are a few cool twists and reveals but nothing like the original. The magic acts are pretty cool and the villains are not bad yet it is hard to see them as much of a real threat to the Horsemen. The ending is okay and although it was kind of obvious to me some people may find it rather exciting. Overall it is not an awful sequel but it could have been a lot better. Now You See Me 2 gets 7/10. I enjoyed this sequel but at the same time the first film is so much better. It has some side stories that are unnecessary and focuses on a past tragedy that had already been dealt with plenty in the original. I thought trying to take viewers back to it again came off as repetitive. I did enjoy the special effects and the film has an okay finale. It is not the worst sequel I have seen but fans of Now You See Me may be disappointed with what this sequel gives them.
People who love magic will enjoy this movie. Fans of this cast may really like this film. If you want to see a really good movie though this is not the one to pick. Now You See Me 2 comes out this Friday. Be sure to like Now You See Me 2 on Facebook and follow it on Twitter.
