Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping takes every jab it can at the pop music genre
I am a fan of comedies. It is a genre that is constantly growing and evolving with each passing generation. There is slap stick comedy, dirty comedy, musical comedy and tons of other types that all aim to make people laugh. Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping does its best to poke as much fun at the pop music scene as it possibly can. I was able to see this film and here is what I thought of it.
Read the plot for Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping here:
“Childhood friends Conner (Andy Samberg), Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) found fame and fortune after forming the hip-hop group the Style Boyz. Owen and Lawrence faded into the background when frontman Conner left the band to launch a successful solo career. Now, the egotistical singer decides to film a documentary about his life while he’s still on top. When his second album flops, the camera is there to capture his world come crashing down.”
I didn’t hate Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping but it does have some issues. The entire film rides on a brand of comedy that not everybody will find funny. It goes to extremes many times to get out the laughs yet sometimes the jokes fall flat. The music is good although it is meant to be dirty and ridiculous yet the concert scenes are some of the funnier moments in this movie. The cast works well together and everyone is having a good time whether they are in a normal scene or one that is completely crazy to its core. The plot is silly yet this is exactly what the film is going for. It never truly takes itself seriously because it knows it is nothing more than a mockumentary that is poking fun at Justin Bieber and many other pop artists.
Yet Popstar Never Stop Stopping is not going to be for everyone. There are many scenes that try way too hard to be funny and came off as stupid and garnered few chuckles from me. There are also some scenes that make little to no sense to the narrative and tend to drag the movie down or stop it from moving altogether. In the end Samberg tries way too hard here and it is a shame because he is a funny guy. Overall it is a comedy some people will really like but most will want to pass on this one. Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping gets 5/10. I by no means hated this comedy but I found it to be nothing more than okay. It didn’t have me laughing in the aisles nor was it anything clever or something that will be remembered years from now. Even though it is unique that sadly doesn’t turn it into a comedy that is worth seeing this weekend.
People who are fans of Andy Samberg may enjoy his newest comedy. Those who like simple stupid comedies may want to check this one out. Yet anyone who wants a really good comedy this is not the film for them. Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping comes out this Friday. Follow Popstar Never Stop Never Stopping on Facebook and Twitter.
