The sequel to the first ‘Pitch Perfect’ with elements old and new to make it a fun film for fans
This is a sequel to the first Pitch Perfect which came out in 2012 and was all about a sorority of women who made acapella singing very popular in colleges across the country. They brought it in ways that had not been seen before, and with this film had popular songs and a group of women who were smart, silly and showed the world that they can accomplish anything.
This time around the girls get to play a special show for the president, but when something goes horribly wrong they get ostracized by the media and are told they are in danger of losing their name and chapter at the university, and whats worse the group may die if they don’t find a way to become the great group everyone knows they can be. The film is full of popular songs and some good choreography and interesting dance numbers. The goal this time is to go to the world acapella show and beat a team who has never lost so that they prove to everyone that they are the best and get their reputations back. But with time running out and some of the group members focusing on other things, this seems like an impossible task. How will they find their sound again? Will they be able to beat Das Sound Machine? And will this be enough to help them prove they are more than a simple group of people who can sing acapella?
The cast works well together and are familiar enough with each other that they are able to bring a certain degree of energy that helps many scenes pop off the screen. There are plenty of musical dance numbers that are fun to watch and bring songs many generations should be enjoy. The plot is simple, and at times rather obvious. The only scene that really blew me away was the finale, it shocked me in a good way and really helped make it a better movie no matter how clear it was to me how the film was going to end. By the end, another year of college is done and some big changes are going to happen from now on in their lives. There is a good scene during the credits that you will not want to miss, I know I enjoyed it.
The problem with this film is that there is little surprises going on as far as the plot is concerned. From the beginning to the middle all the way to the end people knew just what was going to happen. This bothered me a bit. In an era where it is nice to have a surprise here or there, it was a shame to see a movie that is lacking in this department. Maybe it is what the fans want, and let’s be honest I am not a fan of the series. I did like the songs, and there were some really cool cameos that made it a film I at least enjoyed watching, but did nothing to knock my socks off or have me wondering what is going to happen next.
Because of these reasons and more this movie gets 6.5/10. It has some good things going for it, but overall is a movie that phones it in and leaves little to the imagination as far as plot or twists and turns along the way. I am sure people will enjoy it, but it is not a film for everyone.
If you are looking for a fun film to see with your girlfriends, this may be a film to go and see. If you enjoyed Pitch Perfect, you will definitely like this new film. But if you don’t like musicals, this just won’t be a film you will enjoy. It is not a bad sequel, but in so many ways could have been better too. It has a few adult situations, but teens and up will get a kick out of it and want to see it with their friends more than once.
