Jay Snook reviews Cameron Diaz’s ‘Sex Tape’
—
This is an okay comedy, but not the best film I have seen this summer. Sex Tape came out Friday July 18th, and it is rated R. This is not a film for kids to see as it contains swearing, adult situations, and some minor nudity.
The film starts with Annie telling the viewers the story of how she met her husband, Jay. They met in college, and their relationship began with just great sex. It didn’t matter the time or the place, they would do it anywhere and liked each other right away. This went on for many months until one day Jay and Annie are having dinner with her parents, she tells them she is pregnant and that they are getting married. Her mother is not that thrilled, she thinks they are too young. Her dad says, jokingly, “Well, say good bye to the sex.” This freaks out Jay and Annie a bit. They love to have sex and don’t want anything to stop that. So they find some ways to make it work, but while she is pregnant it isn’t as easy as it once was. Soon the day comes where she has a beautiful boy, and once he is born both of their lives are never going to be the same. They try many times to have sex after he is born, but he keeps crying so they never get to do it together as much.
We see them next, years later, where Jay is working for a music company and Annie runs a blog where she tells stories of being a mom and how it can affect your life. Her blog is about to be bought by some big company, and Jay is doing well enough to have a good amount of Apple products. One night the kids are away Annie decides to surprise Jay with a night that she hopes will bring the fire back to their sex life. They try to have sex in a few different ways, but all they do is hurt each other. Then Annie has a great idea, “Let’s film ourselves having sex.” Jay thinks this is a great idea, it is the best idea she has ever had. They film over 3 hours of everything and both pass out next to each other. Before Annie passes out she asks Jay to delete the video, he says no problem he will gladly do it. What he doesn’t know is that the video gets uploaded to the cloud, and gets sent to everyone he ever gave an old iPad to. Soon their mission is clear, they must find all the iPads and destroy them before any of their friends and family see them. This takes them to Annie’s parents house, her potential bosses house and to the house of their best friends. Will they be able to get all these devices back in time? And can they do this before anyone sees their video? And who is the mysterious person who texted Jay and said “I liked your video?”
Jason Segal and Cameron Diaz play well together in this movie. They have a great chemistry, and each scene they are in together is hilarious. It never seems that they are trying too hard to be funny. Rob Lowe is also great, he seems to play a straight character but once you see him in a few scenes you find that isn’t true at all. The scene in his house is quite funny, and it is nice to see Rob Lowe play a character like this. Rob Corddry and Ellie Kemper also work well together, they are a believable couple. They also seem to be normal, but once you see them in action it is great to see the hi jinks they get into.
This film did not do well in theaters this weekend. It got the #4 spot and only made $15 million in the US alone. It got bad reviews from critics and people just aren’t flocking to go see this film. It is a comedy that could have been much better, but I personally did enjoy it. If you want to see a funny film with a date, this is worth checking out. If you are a fan of either of these stars, you should go see this movie. It is funny and does have a clever story. It is a story that I think many couples could relate to, trying to keep their private lives private and keep the fire in their marriage after children. It is a simple movie that will bring some good chuckles to you, and that alone is worth the price of a ticket.
