Brandy Pettigrew likes what she sees and she thinks you will, too.
Looking for your new Sunday night thrill? Look no further than Penny Dreadful on Showtime! This psychosexual horror drama premiered recently and I’m already hooked. John Logan, writer of Gladiator and Skyfall, gave me all the suspense and gore I’ve been missing since The Walking Dead season ended.
“Night Work” is the premiere by executive producer Sam Mendes (Director of Skyfall). This episode introduced me to Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton of License to Kill), a well-to-do adventurer who is searching for his missing daughter, Mina. By his side is Vanessa Ives (Eva Green of Casino Royale), a spiritualist, with interesting powers that I can tell Logan will be introducing us to more in the near future. They try to recruit Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett of 30 Days of Night), a gun-slinger, to help them track down Mina, and fight off the Egyptian vampire creatures that they encounter along the way. Of course, the episode wouldn’t be complete without the first appearance of Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his monster.
If you’re squeamish, this isn’t the show for you. Expect anything from opium dens to autopsy labs, snakes to piles of dismembered bodies (this is premium cable after all).
There is something in this for every lover of the great monsters of fiction as well as intrigue, sex, blood and gore. This show is part League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a little bit X-Files, with a dash of American Horror Story thrown in for good measure.
