All three of these books changed comics forever in the mid-1980s—making them not just for kids anymore. If you’ve loved Nolan’s Batman movies or Singer’s X-Men films, you can thank these guys.

My first response to the headline was: “No, Jack Kirby will eat your babies…Stan Lee will just get all the credit.” But I tease, I tease. Stan Lee clearly had better business sense than Jack Kirby, but I don’t think Lee betrayed anybody– I can see how the disparity in copyright treatment would have driven the wedge between him & everyone else, but I think it was the flawed system, not a scheming Stan the Man.
COMICS OPINIONS TIME!
If you want Alan Moore Superman stories, I’d say “For The Man Who Has Everything” is better…& if you are into comics enough to appreciate meta-commentary, his Supreme run is where it is at. Failing that– Grant Morrison’s “All-Star Superman” is one of the greatest comic achievements of the modern age. Grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin? Heck YES.
What, no Bone? Heck, no Sandman?
In the capes & tights genre, I’d also go on to recommend Brubaker & Fraction’s “Immortal Iron Fist,” Bendis’ “Alias,” The cosmic tales of Marvel starting with Giffen’s “Annihilation” saga, Abnett & Lanning on “Nova” & “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Warren Ellis’ “Authority,” uh….crap, I could be here all day.
