An amazing true story of one man who refused to give up on his dreams
Movies about an inspiring person or event in sports history is not a brand new concept. We have seen it before in films like The Blind Side, Remember the Titans, The Rookie and A League of Their Own. These films tell stories that may seem hard to believe but they are all based on true events that actually happened. There is a new film coming out this week that follows this tradition called Eddie the Eagle. It is an amazing story and here is what this writer thought of it.
All of his life Eddie Edwards (Taron Egerton) has dreamed of becoming an Olympic champion. Sadly all of his life people have been telling him it is never going to happen and he should just give up on this silly dream, including his father. No matter how many times Eddie hurts himself or seems to fail at some kind of sport though he refuses to give up and his mom Janette Edwards (Jo Hartley) believes in him and encourages Eddie to keep trying. One day when all seems lost and Eddie is almost ready to finally give up he thinks he has found his sport which is Ski jumping.
Eddie decides to head to Germany to try to qualify for the Winter Olympics and fate has him run into Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman) who was a former ski jumper and now works as a snowplow driver. Bronson is impressed by Eddie’s spirit and determination and decides to train this young underdog. Somehow these two working together get Eddie to the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Will Eddie be able to become a champion? What type of training will he have to do to make this happen? Or will he end up getting badly hurt and have to quit?
Eddie the Eagle was a really good movie. The cast is a well oiled machine that does a great job of moving the story along. The soundtrack is awesome and does a splendid job of taking viewers back to the 1980s. The special effects are amazing and really show how beautiful and treacherous this sport can be, especially for those who are not keeping focused. There are a couple moments where audiences will see what this writer means and they sure can be hard to watch. Eddie the Eagle really brings this story to life in a fashion that almost everyone can enjoy and once it is all over it is people will be amazed at what this underdog was able to achieve in such little time.
Eddie the Eagle has earned 8/10. It tells an astounding true story in a way that never gets dragged down or boring. The cast was very well picked and each person has an integral part to play no matter how big or small it may be. This writer loved this movie and it is definitely one people shouldn’t miss out on. It will not be a film everyone will enjoy but has something for most people to like.
If you enjoy amazing sports stories then you need to check this film out. If you are a fan of either of these stars you won’t want to miss this movie. Eddie the Eagle comes out this Friday.
