Three friends share one last Christmas together and some wild stuff happens on this magical night
There have been a number of clever Christmas comedies over the years. There are classics like Christmas Vacation and Scrooged and more recent hits like Bad Santa and Elf. But there are few comedies like The Night Before. It takes a look at three old friends and a wild night that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
Fourteen years ago Ethan’s (Joseph Gordon Levitt) parents died on Christmas Eve and it devastated him. Since this happened his closest friends Isaac ( Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) have been there to support him by making it a tradition to go out with him and having an amazing Christmas Eve together. But over the years life has begun to change for Ethan’s friends with Isaac about to become a dad and Chris has become a very famous NFL star. These three friends decide to have one final Christmas Eve together in New York City and a lot of zany situations happen along the way. Is Isaac ready to become a dad? How is it that Chris has become so famous at this stage in his life? And will Ethan be okay with this being the last hurrah for these three old friends? And will this be the year the find one of the best parties the city has to offer?
This is a pretty good comedy. The cast are the perfect match and really are able to turn a ridiculous scene into something wonderful. There are many moments that only worked so well because these three guys play off of each other perfectly. They can all sing, dance and it is clear they enjoyed working with each other. But they are not the only reason this is was a good movie. There are a number of surprises along the way that really helps to make this a one of a kind film.
The soundtrack is brilliant with a mix of old Christmas songs and a few contemporary ones that make for some very funny moments. But what is best about this movie is how it shows any tragedy can be overcome if you have close friends to help you out. No matter how dark things may be if you have people you can confide in and trust there is little that can hold you back from living you life.
This movie gets 7/10. It is a good movie but it is not going to be for everyone. There are a number of drugs references and some gross humor that some people will find offensive or ridiculous. There is also a good amount of cursing and many adult situations so this is definitely not a movie that kids should see. But if you are in the mood for a dirty comedy then this is a movie that will make you laugh until it hurts.
If you are a fan of any of these three actors then you should see this movie. If you enjoy gross humor this is a film you definitely should see. If you want to see a more adult themed Christmas movie then this is the one to pick. The Night Before is coming out this Friday.
