This will tug on your heart strings!
It can be a little bit hard to climb out of the fear and melancholy when bad news dominates the headlines, but here’s something kind cool that might brighten your day. After the New Zealand parliament passed legislation to legalize gay marriage, the spectators from the balcony started singing.
It’s very cool to see a group of spectators celebrating with their leaders equality finally coming to New Zealand. It’s sweet and tender moment, and a moment that makes me happy to be a part of humanity.
The Huffington Post explains:
On Wednesday, New Zealand’s Parliament voted to legalize same-sex marriage in a 77 to 44 vote. As lawmakers applauded the final vote, spectators crowded into the public galleries above burst into song, serenading the bill’s sponsor, lesbian MP Louisa Wall.
The Associated Press reports the song was “Pokarekare Ana,” a love song in the country’s indigenous Maori language.
As Towleroad notes, “This is what equality sounds like.”
Thanks to our friends at The Huffington Post for spotting this gem!
Beautiful moment, though, I might point out, NZ doesn’t have Senators, she is an MP…
Oh! Thanks for the catch, Samuel. I updated the headline to “lawmaker”. 🙂
“Though she be but little she is fierce”
Small country, big heart..proud to be a kiwi today and every day. 🙂
