Ken, this is really interesting. And I agree, there are so many unanswered questions. Sometimes I wonder how the openness and freedom of web publishing generally, is actually improving our lives as readers. After all, so much of the internet’s material isn’t worth the time we invest in it. In a sense, we run the risk of losing not only researched long-form stories, but quality overall. When we reduce the number of quality “professional” publishing outlets, the act of reading becomes quite blurry, because as you say, curation is not as simple as some believe. Good article!

    • Thanks so much for the feedback, JP. It’s really a lot of shades of grey, no clear picture. A friend who is an accomplished author with several traditionally published books wrote this to me in response:

“Becoming an author was always difficult. While it’s 100 times easier today to self publish, it’s 100 times harder to get noticed.”

I hope when it is time for my book to find its way to the public I won’t suffer that fate, but I am anticipating all of the challenges of the digital landscape, bad and good!
