This comment is from Andy Schulkind on the post “Does Paterno’s Death Resolve Anything?“
As the father of two adopted daughters who were abused by their biological parents and foster care parents, I have a great deal of anger about Joe Paterno’s passive response to alleged sexual abuse.

Andy – Quite Right! If it makes you angry that’s fine and correct.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. We are all entitled to our own feelings.
Paterno knows that he should have spoken up in the presence of Evil. The tragedy is that Paterno was capable of such greatness, but also capable of a material dereliction of duty to his God and to his fellow man. The issue Andy Schulkind is not about feelings. The issue is about justice, sorrow and rage.
Agreed.
As a father (birth, foster and adoptive) who understands your experience first-hand, let me acknowledge you by saying that I “get it”. Your anger is understandable.
That said (and I hope I am not getting too “preachy” on you), I believe that as men who strive to be good, we must recognize that we all travel with our own “dark passenger”… the man who can lie, manipulate and at times lives in abject and irrational fear of the loss of his turf/kingdom.
That, I believe is the challenge to good men… the daily battle with our own dark passengers. When you come to recognize that man in you, then you can re-purpose some of your justifiable anger to a new good.
You have already begun that by appropriately loving (and defending) your daughters. The opportunity you will have every day from hereon, to be “THE” man who will forever teach them what a real man is, is a great privilege. It will also help mitigate the anger.
Onward…
