Who says we can only have two genders?

There’s a difference between biological sex and gender, so getting rid of gender categories does not mean there would be no physical differences. Even the recent bathroom law in North Caroline recognizes the difference between biological sex and gender!
Obviously, gender is more than just reproductive function. No one has ever had to present an ovum to be allowed into a women’s restroom, and no one has ever been required to give a viable sperm sample before being allowed into the men’s room. (Ejaculation may take place once inside, but it’s never been an entrance requirement, and not all semen has sperm in it anyway….)
The question seems to be based on a false assumption, though. Here’s the trap almost everyone is falling into—the choice is either two distinct genders or no genders at all. “If we can’t have two, then we can’t have any!” But why are those the only two options? Who says that there can’t be three or more genders? Who says a person can’t change from one to the other in the course of a life?
Consider the fact that from an infrastructure standpoint, we pretty much already have sex-neutral and gender-neutral bathrooms. With the exception of urinals, all the fixtures are the same. Porcelain companies don’t manufacture women’s toilet bowls and men’s toilet bowls. We don’t have separate sewer systems for male feces and female feces. Where I work, there are diaper changing stations in both men’s and women’s restrooms.
