“It can be hard to go to counseling. The hardest part was making the first appointment.”

This is a comment by Travis on the post “Ten Reasons I Decided to see a Therapist“.

“I appreciate your sharing. It reminds me of important things about myself and about being human. I find that it can be hard to go to counseling—and I’m a counselor myself. I recently relocated and wanted to meet with a counselor. The hardest part was making the first appointment. Funny. I always encourage clients to call—or people to call me—but I’m nervous about doing it to.

“Maybe you sharing the above reasons for going to counseling will help others make the call too.”

For me, the hardest part was going back. That first visit was like a kick in the gut, something I didn’t want to experience again. But I did experience it again and again…and each time it was harder to face what I knew was going to be grueling. The light at the end of the tunnel was not a sudden explosion of awareness but a gradual easing of tension and pressure…and ultimately a feeling that, for me at least, everything was going to be all right.
