I know this so I point at Q-Tip
and he states, "Black is Black"
— Posdnous, "Me Myself and I"
On last weekend's webcast, the topic was brought up about what makes a "Black" project. Hootie and the Blowfish? Essence magazine with a white managing editor and fashion director? Who gets to say?
Komplicated believes that you do. So, despite our editor-in-chief expressing the opinion that it's all about intent — Hootie yes, Vanilla Ice no, Living Colour yes, Kreayshawn no — but we're gonna let you have your say!
Your choices …
- One Black participant makes it a Black project
(The Hootie position) - It tries to speak to a Black audience
(the "modern Essence" paradigm) - It has to be Black owned
(the "old BET" argument) - It has to be like stuff made by Black people
(the Vanilla Ice/Kreayshawn atrocity) - Who the hell am I — or you — to judge?
(the isolationist proposition)
