It just got unmistakably real.
he Marvel Universe has gotten its fair share of fighting action, thanks to Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom games. However, Superman and his fellow crime fighters over at DC Comics haven't had their fair share of combat time, outside of an interesting match-up a couple of years ago with the Teen-rated crossover Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. That imbalance is about to change in a huge way, though, as DC Entertainment and WB Games have announced a huge new project titled Injustice: Gods Among Us, bringing together a slew of DC-based heroes and villains together for a massive battle.
While many critics weren't too fond of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe due to its toned-down violence (compared to how Mortal Kombat usually plays), the early look at Injustice: Gods Among Us shows what appears to be a capable fighting game, and with good reason — the game is being developed by Ed Boon and his team at Netherrealm Studios, the group that handily rebooted Mortal Kombat last year. Utilizing the same technology as Kombat, the game pits the likes of Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Wonder Woman and The Flash in battle against one another at a number of locations. Furthermore, comic veterans Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (who plotted and wrote story for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe) will return to the world of DC brawlers as writers.
Gamespot hosted a huge reveal for the game earlier this morning, complete with an extensive interview with Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. He spoke at great length about giving the DC Universe its own fighting game, as well as what to expect from it, saying, "Injustice is our twist on the blockbuster over-the-top superhero game in a fighting game shell. We're trying to add some major components to shake up the fighting game genre … One of the big kind of goals that we have its to is to have fighters that feel completely different from one another."
Bits and pieces of in-game footage are shown throughout the interview, including one scene where a character goes flying through a building before landing on the other side — which you might have seen previously in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
The game is expected to be on the show floor at the Warner Bros. booth next week, and CBR will be there to check it out in action and provide a more in-depth report. Needless to say, it appears as though the Marvel vs. Capcom series finally has itself some competition.
Superman punched The Flash into orbit and then smacked him back down to the surface. Wow.
Injustice: Gods Among Us will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U in 2013.
