Amy Lewis is first grade teacher who has an autistic son.
In the video Amy Lewis and Jamie Utt discuss some ways to avoid identity-based bullying. People will often treat bullying like a general issue but really bullying happens for specific reasons and can’t be solved with general solutions.
“I literally wake up at night and stress out and get really nervous about what is going to happen to him because he is different.” Says Lewis. As inclusion becomes more normalized in schools it can create anxieties for parents of special needs children. Utt says that it helps to be proactive with your school principle and teachers so that the first time they hear from you as a parent, it’s not you calling to talk about bullying.
I was just reading this article in how bullying has detrimental effects on children in the long run. We need to look out for children who are being picked on and stop it when we see it. Here is the scientific article.
