Shaping a boy into a man is tough. But it’s not about demanding toughness.

Editor’s Note: This week our artist-in-residence, Judy Clement Wall, was inspired by Aleasa Word’s article The One Rule for Boys Everyone Must Know to create this image for “The Visual Conversation.” In the article, psychologist Dr. Max Wachtel identifies the rule: “When boys are taught and encouraged to recognize and express their feelings, and to understand how other people feel—rather than being tough, unemotional, and clueless about the motivations of others—the world becomes a happier, healthier, and safer place.” Judy’s graphic visualizes the rule in a father and son interaction. We encourage readers to build on “The Visual Conversation” and create an actual conversation in the comments.
