Father where are you?
—
Every father and son could benefit from sharing a few minutes listening to this powerful song togther. The title is Papaoutai which means, Father Where Are You. This is a passionate call for fathers to be more present with their sons, to enagage with them and a key line in the song is this;
“…everyone knows how to make babies But no one knows how to make fathers…”
This is in part born out of his own experience of dealing with a father who was absent during his childhood and then the final loss of that relationship as a result of the Rawandan genoicide during which his father was killed.
The lyrics are in French and I have translated them below.
Tell me where he’s from so that at last I’ll know where to go Mother says when we look properly we always find what we are looking for
She says he’s never very far away He leaves often for work Mother says working is good Better than being in bad company isn’t it?
Where is your father? Tell me, where your father is? Without even talking to him he knows what is wrong
Where are you? Papa, where are you? Believe him or not There will soon come a day when we won’t believe him anymore one day or another, we’ll all be a father And one day or another we’ll disappear
Will we be detestable? Will we be admirable? genitors or geniuses Tell us who gave birth to these irresponsible people?
Ah tell us who? Hey everyone knows how to make babies But no one knows how to make fathers Mister know-it-all, should have inherited it, that’s it? should he suck it out of his thumb or what?
