100 Words on Love, by Steve Edwards
–
February 1942. A uniformed Private First Class, my grandfather spreads butter on a biscuit. Across the lunch table, my grandmother gazes steadily at him. The threat of war, the fear of death: none of that in the photograph. Only their youth. Only love. They don’t know that in two months, when my grandfather wins $200 in a craps game, they will hurry down to Dillon, South Carolina to find a Justice of the Peace. My grandfather’s military service—twenty-seven months in the infantry—hovers in the distance, an ungraspable wisp of steam. Here they are: happy to be together.
