When I filled out the birth registration of our newborn baby, my nerves made me carefully double-check the spelling of our baby’s name. After all, it was the first piece of paperwork regarding our child, so everything had to be right. In some ways, I felt I was writing an exam component in an application to be a father. Not the type of examination measuring my accumulated parental capital, but a personal test. It was the first time I could prove to myself that I am somehow worthy of such a wonderful gift, no matter how banal the task of proving it.
