She “almost didn’t make it” the doctors told us. Her Apgar score was a two. “A Miracle baby,” the nurses said. Her first breath did not come until well after a minute of being removed. Yet, when I knelt down beside her in that bed, where she laid, connected to machines, and said “Daddy is here”, she turned her head as if she knew me. She could not have seemed more alive. And when Laura held her later, rocking and talking to her softly, I thought about how strange it was to have my whole world sitting in one chair.
