DEAR DR. AUSTIN: It seems that so many of us hold stress in our necks. What are some exercises we can do to help this? — STIFF NECK
DEAR STIFF NECK: The neck is a very common area to hold stress, coupled with the growing ergonomic problems that exist in our society (i.e “text neck”) and it becomes a constant problem area for people. The first step is to correct any postural problems you may have that are increasing the problem. The next step is to relax! Life never stops. If you let too many worries pile on, it can lead to health problems, including a stiff neck. Take some time to meditate, slow down and let your mind and body detach for a while. Meditation doesn’t mean you have to sit quietly while chanting, “Om.” It can be anything that quiets the mind. I personally go fishing or trap shooting as my meditation. As for stretches specifically targeting your neck, the best way to stretch your neck is through resistance based training. Place your hand on your right cheek and attempt to turn your head right as you push left with your hand. Repeat on the other side and again for the forehead and back of the head. The key is to maintain a steady and even pressure and avoid sharp, jerky movements.
