The race doesn’t begin at the starting line, it begins with the desire to run.
We’ve all done it, spent our time getting ready to get ready instead of investing our energy into starting to do what we want to do. We treat success like a long range goal, instead of something we can experience today.
There are three “secrets” that will get you off the starting line and create the perfect conditions for winning any race you set yourself.
#1 – What do you really want?
I always ask people, “do you want what you want or only what you want to want?” Which sounds complicated, but if you’re running someone else’s race, or running the race because someone else says you should, even winning the race won’t really be a win. The conditions are never right to begin something that doesn’t take you somewhere you want to go. Because getting to a place you never wanted to go isn’t success.
#2 – What can you do today?
It can be one thing. Even one simple thing. Maybe today you write down your goal. And tomorrow you run around the block. Even walking around the block counts. Because when you’ve done that you’ve changed the conditions. In your favor. Which is a small success you can celebrate every singe day.
#3 – What can you do everyday?
What one habit do you need to adopt to change the conditions progressively, cumulatively, and sustainably in your favor? Maybe you need to do 15 minutes of stretching every day before you leave the house. Maybe you need to get up half an hour earlier.
This isn’t a “do more of” or “do less of” kind of intention. It’s a defined activity that you will do every day. In a week, or a month, you’ll be ready to add another everyday habit, based on what will change the conditions even more. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it puts you steps, or even inches, nearer your goal. Whatever it is, schedule it, do it. Celebrate the success of having done it. And you will find the conditions are perfect for beginning. Because you have already begun.
