Editor’s Note: We have removed an image here from the Rolling Stones museum that depicted urinals fashioned after the album image from “Hot Lips” of a cartoon mouth. We heard readers’ complaints that the image evoked similar sexist iconography and while we originally did not see that perspective, we understand it and have removed the image.

Translation: Some of the readers saw the “Hot Lips” and jumped straight to the objectification of women.
And with the background on the “Hot Lips” not being certain basically the image was taken down because of one interpretation of them.
A lot of people assuming the mouth is a woman’s on the GMP Facebook page. Is it because of the shade of red looking like lipstick?
I’m assuming so, I just assumed it was a gender neutral mouth. It’s kind of gross, but I don’t think it’s misogynistic.
I’m also extremely baffled at how many people on the FB are so angry about this and blaming GMP for “posting this content”, when if you actually click the article you can see it’s from Buzzfeed. Not GMP or any authors.
They’re also completely glossing over the hilarity of the other urinals because this happens to be the default photo. The other ones are amazing.
I’m not a man, but if I was, I would absolutely use a guitar shaped urinal.
The “Hot Lips” were reportedly supposed to be Mick Jagger’s mouth, or joking about his mouth, back when the original album came out. However, that may be urban legend. Because I couldn’t find any proof that those lips were supposed to be Mick’s back in the original album cover, I couldn’t quite justify saying “They are definitely NOT female lips!” to the people who were offended and so we decided to take them down. I think it was the right decision. The reality is this: If a lot of people are upset with you, and a lot of them are… Read more »
Even though I personally think everyone overreacted, I commend you folks for taking it down. I agree – if enough people voice a distaste or disagreement with something, best to just let it go even if you disagree personally.
Some urinals are tourist attractions and quite elaborate. I think it’s a gross invasion of privacy and am outraged that women would be encouraged to view it. “A trip to San Luis Obispo wouldn’t be complete without visiting the men’s room at the Madonna Inn. As crazy as it sounds, this room is a popular stop for both men and women. Unfortunately, if you’re a man and need to use this for it’s original purpose, be prepared to be interrupted by giggling women ” http://www.urinal.net/madonna/ As for the other ones, the first one had a lot of controversy, but I… Read more »
Seriously? So if sexism and racism are hidden we shouldn’t be offended?
And isn’t the point of this page that men should be offended by sexism too?
@ itsmimi
“Seriously? So if sexism and racism are hidden we shouldn’t be offended?”
I think people can enjoy bawdy humor from time to time or erotic entertainment without it necessarily being sexist. I don’t know that it rises to the level of sexism, but that doesn’t mean people won’t get offended. It probably should be in a stall in case some guy got offended.
Disgusting! Sexual pee games are very different in that they are in said context between two consulting adults…here womens mouths are depicted as objects to be used..and hahaha its so funny..NOT.
I don’t see any women there. I see lips. What makes you think those lips are female? Sexist pig.
Perhaps itsmimi is referring to the dragon?
It’s not sexist by any means. It was just a clever use of the rolling stones band logo. They are cartoon lips, not attached to a face, and therefore genderless. Is it wrong to be peeing into a giant gargoyle head? Does that somehow harm the “religious motif” with which they associate? No. It’s just art. There’s nothing wrong with creating art depicting race, age, sex, nudity, religion, etc. Why is there something wrong with being decorative and humorous? Why must a urinal look like something meant to be pissed into when it can be aesthetically pleasing?
One of the arguments I heard was that their logo was clearly meant to be “women’s lips” and perpetuating misogyny by assuming it was a reference to fellatio. …A quick Google search finds the information that the artist who originally created the logo did it to poke fun at Mick Jagger’s mouth being his most noticeable feature. While it was a good move on GMP’s part to fix the photo since it got so much outrage, I’m seriously just baffled at it all. It was so unnecessary and a bunch of people jumping to conclusions without reading the article, when… Read more »
