Patrick Sallee was a huge fan of Back to the Future when he was a kid. Now, on the 30th anniversary, he’s contemplating time travel himself.

October 21, 2015…what does this date mean to you? Nothing? Well, it isn’t just a random Wednesday, it’s an important date in cinematic history. October 21, 2015 is the date Marty McFly traveled forward to in Back to the Future II from Universal. There is your trivia for the day!
But why does that matter today? On that date, the Back to the Future Trilogy will be re-released in theaters nationally, there’ll be live events, and the trilogy will be available both digitally and physically. Great news for us parents who want to show one of our favorite series to our kids.
For those of you too young to remember this one, you definitely need to go see it. It’s a classic, and still totally entertaining.

I was a big fan when it originally came out, I even dressed up as Marty McFly for Halloween. Not a lot of first graders knew who I was supposed to be…but that didn’t matter, it was awesome!
This anniversary got me to thinking about the question anyone that has seen this movie has likely asked themselves: If I could go back in time, and Marty McFly’s hometown of Hill Valley wasn’t an option, what time period would I choose? Not just what historical era would be fun to visit, but what if I got stuck there? What time period would be cool to live in? After all, Marty did almost get stuck in history…
Here are my top six back-in-time destinations:
- Italy during the Renaissance
The “rebirth” of learning, literature, art and culture. The rise of humanism and an entirely new way of viewing the world. One of these enlightened scholars could have certainly fixed a broken flux capacitor.
- 1780s United States
The Founding Fathers. Seriously, this group of people, their background and accomplishments. Witnessing the creation of this great country has to be on the list. I think Doc Brown’s hair would fit right in as well.
- Ancient Egypt:
An incredibly powerful nation at the time, which is credited for many achievements, like creating a system of mathematics and an effective system of medicine. Though I can only imagine how the presence of a souped up Delorean might have influenced their knowledge.
- 1920s New York City:
A prosperous time in the history of New York, a booming city, the Yankees had several of the greatest baseball teams of all time and of course the fashion of the day. The 1985 look would certainly go over well with the formal crowd of the 20s.
- Ancient Greece:
The first Olympics occurred in 776 B.C. in Athens. What is left of these ancient buildings and sporting venues would be incredible to visit today, but I can only imagine what they were like at the time, filled with people and intense sport. If Marty McFly landed there with his skateboard, he probably could’ve changed the face of the Olympics forver. More X-games than decathalon!
- United States, 1960s:
This one is easy. So many significant things happened in the 60s. John F. Kennedy as President. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. The Vietnam War. In the original Back to the Future film, Marty went back to the 1960s to meet his parents and make sure they ended up together. I wonder who I would meet from my family?

So many times and places to choose from…where would you take the DeLorean? And what if you got stuck there?
1930s Norway, where the population also revamp their society in putting curbs on the wealthy people and companies and it has a standard of living like Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. In addition, the government owes the oil fields and puts the money into the treasure for the public good and using the money to create alternative means of energy. 1950s and 1960s US where corporations and wealthy people paid most of the taxes and you did not see them going out of business and being homeless. If you had problems with your goods or services at least, you could talk… Read more »
1950s and 1960s in America. You had good paying jobs, strong unions, lots of small and medium size businesses and large corporations that were kept in check by strong government regulation. If you had something broken, you could get it fixed by calling a repair man or take it down to the business place to get it fix. College education was free or affordable and you had good vocational programs for those who did not want to go to college. Street gangs were not a problem compare today. 1980s to 2015 Finland where they re-vamp their entire society where they… Read more »
