This is one of the most critically endangered species in the world – the Bald Ibis.
–––
The Ibis’s population has been reduced to just 500 individuals, mainly in the rocky desert of Morocco and one tiny outlier at the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria.
After a gap of nearly 600 years, this great rarity has returned to Spain to breed on the craggy cliffs underneath the Moorish town of Vejer just a few kilometres from me here in Facinas.
The Ibis are a spectacular and welcome sight and would seem a descendent of the Moors has returned to its ancestral home.
