This comment of the day was from Jed Diamond on the post “Take a Quick Check, You Might be a Twifty?“
I think I may be a Twifty, though we’d have to expand the age range a bit. I still remember my son challenging me to train with him for a marathon after I finished my last book. “I’m too old,” I told him. “I’ve never run a marathon (26 plus miles) in my life, even when I was in my 20s and did fun runs regularly.” But I was up to the challenge and ended up completing the race, feeling wonderful. I ran in the redwoods in Northern California and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was like running in heaven.
Seeing 20 somethings zipping past me, exhilarated me. “Hey, I’m 63 years old, running my first marathon and I’m alive and still going.” The women waved. The men were mostly too focused on “the race” to pay any attention to me.
Another characteristic of Twiftys may be doing things that are not PC for your sex. I’ve been doing Zumba for 3 years and almost no men seem to want to do it. I love the exercise, the dance, the Latin rhythms. And my wife thinks its great that I hang out with a bunch of hot, sweaty, women. (My wife prefers Tai Chi and Chi Gong.
Now that I’m past 70, what catchy word captures 70/20 (Twisentys?)
