Short, lyrical, and imagistic, Kevin Minh’s poem contains all the compact power of a baby’s heartbeat.
—
Still Beating Heart
dark men sing songs of deliverance
among stalks of raw hands
that divide mule from tractor,
dreams from drought.
tilling soil and expelling rocks,
into soft, shallow rows they plant
the still beating hearts
of their babies’ first words.
