In honor of his favorite time of year, college football season, Alex Yarde gives you one of his all time favorite recipes for tailgating.

This is one of our favorite times of year, college football season! The air is crisp & days have grown shorter. My kids are excited to go in the back yard and tackle each other in piles of leaves (I carefully raked together), toss a football around and watch and learn as they help Daddy cook two tailgates worth of food before the game. And we found Dollar General to be a cost effective way to supply me with all I need to host epic all day game day College Football parties.
Most weekend afternoons we get an early start preparing to host our friends and family. I love to cook so I pull out all the stops, plenty of the typical beer, brawts & burgers, chips & dips but I’m kind of a local legend for my special Slow Cooked Dr Pepper® BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches!
It’s got a total of FIVE ingredients, it takes a long time but it melts in your mouth and tastes like I’ve smoked the pork for 24 hours, thanks to the rich, spicy, tones of the Dr Pepper® combined with smoky & tangy notes a dash of your favorite BBQ sauce infuses into the pork! I wish you could smell my home as it cooks! The best thing is once it’s done, I leave my Slow Cooker on low, set out Onion Kaiser Rolls & my old fashioned cole slaw sit back, relax and let my guests pig out as we watch the games!
Here’s all you need to make you a Game day legend too! –
Slow Cooked Dr Pepper® BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Ingredients:
1 Fresh (not frozen) trimmed Bone-In Pork Shoulder Roast (I trim the tough skin off)
1 can of Dr Pepper®
Garlic & Pepper Powder
1 Large Spanish onion
Your Favorite BBQ Sauce
Plus-
Cole Slaw (prepackaged or homemade) & Rolls (Onion Kaiser, trust me)
Take your roast out of the fridge and let it warm to room temperature.
Arrange the onion slices on the bottom of your slow cooker. Rub the outside of the roast with the Garlic & Pepper Powder.
Pour the can of Dr Pepper® over everything and cook on high 7-8 hours.
Grab yourself another can of Dr Pepper to drink, go outside and play with your kids, watch the pre game shows (optional)
When the meat is falling off the bone drain about half the liquid, take two forks and shred the pork and remove the bone.
Add a few dashes of BBQ sauce to remaining liquid and cook for another 20 minutes.
Serve it up on your warm Kaiser Rolls, top the pork with a generous dollop of slaw.
Oh needless to say wash it all down with an ice cold Dr Pepper®!
Happy Game Day to you and yours!
Where’s the coleslaw recipe? I want exactly what you have right there on your plate!! LOL.
