Over scheduled? It’s mind numbing to see how parents are filling kids schedules. In so far as “structure” … kids work well with structure but with structure, you allow for free time, time to relax and enjoy.
I am 74 and taking piano lessons from a woman not much youger than me. We get on well I was asking her how her students were doing getting ready for their exams. She was silent for a while and told me the story of a 17 year old girl who collapsed into tears with her a few days ago. She is a young woman from a very good upper middle class family, with supportive and caring parents. As a father of a 17month old daughter, you would think my insight into this topic is lacking, possibly premature. I remember when Ellie was first beginning to crawl and play with interactive learning toys. My mother gave me unsolicited words of wisdom;”Let her play by herself regularly. That’s where her imagination develops. Kids who are constantly entertained don’t get that opportunity. Also, she said, kids who are constantly structured/entertained are Inconsolable when the entertainment stops. They don’t know what to do.
