Chevrolet’s “focus group” is a truckin’ flatbed of societal male stereotypes.
_______
The commercial begins with a simple question: Can a truck make you more _____?
Handsome?
Dependable?
Rugged?
The rest is difficult to capture in words.
Focus on what makes up the man, not what he’s leaning on.

I drive a Pontiac Vibe. Does that change the way you feel about me?
And the man standing in front of a sedan– apparently we should care little for his story because it’s what’s in the background that counts.
This focus group needs to focus harder. Focus on what makes up the man, not what he’s leaning on.

I recognize it’s just advertisement. It’s meant to be provocative. I also recognize that, through the sheer creation of this article, I’m providing additional exposure for Chevrolet.
Perhaps this commercial is a blessing in disguise. Because, if the resulting question from this advertisement is, “Can a commercial make you more _____?”, and you fill in the blank with, “passionate about the Good Men Project message”, then I think Chevy has done its job.

Thank you! I saw this and couldn’t believe it. I sent a very stern email to them to voice my disappointment.
