Systems are created by people, so I find it interesting when people tell me how limited my success will be without a college degree because of the way “the system is set up.”
Have these people relinquished their power over “the system” to the system itself? Ancient practices don’t solve new problems, which is why advances are made in technology, culture, and science. Systems should advance, too, but this can only happen when people change them, or create new ones.
My life is all about changing and creating systems, so in thinking “outside of the box”—or the cubical—employment was never something I sought as a career path.
I knew I wanted my life to be dedicated to protecting the environment, working with young people, and building prosperous communities. However, I had no idea exactly how I was going use my time. I thought that maybe speaking to others about my dreams could help me see my own vision with more clarity…. boy was I wrong.
Success is about passion, practice, and performance, and will only come when you grant yourself permission to be extraordinary. The more I spoke to people about the decision I made – both college graduates and elders – the more I realized that far too many people have no power of how they spend their time because they give it to the system that robs them of it.
People see life as a linear path from school to job to coffin, instead of learning, loving, and living. Suddenly, thinking about every inventor, innovator, and revolutionary, I became comfortable with not knowing what my future looked like, as long as I was in control of it.
People are sculptures; they’re artwork to be chiseled into perfection, but it can only happen when we face the person in the mirror and get to work. That has a lot of different meanings to many people, but to me it was about making a very unpopular decision to live in a world created by me. Everyone should do the same; not necessarily dropping out of college, but investing every second of the day into making your reflection flawless.
That means when you’re not doing schoolwork, on the clock at your job, or fast asleep, you should be surrounded with like minded, passionate, and positive people that push you out of your comfort zone. Millennials like me have inherited the task of literally saving the world. We have to fix corrupt governments, save the environment, repair the economy, rewrite history, end the wars that our elders created, and so on and so on.
There’s no time for self doubt or to live a life without purpose, so manifest your destiny in spite of present obstacles and those yet to come. And lastly, whenever someone talks to you about “the system,” remind them that WE ARE the system, and “the system” will change because we change it!
