Celebrating All Family Structures on Independence Day
–
When we decided to come up with Dads Cookin’ with Kids, the idea was to help foster a better bonding experience with dads and their children with the age old gathering tool “food.” For some kids though, they don’t have the option to spend time with their dad for various reasons. Some dads are deployed with the military, some choose not to be involved in one of the best experiences ever, some dads have passed on and some kids are in a home with two loving moms instead. To make sure we don’t forget about any kids, we wanted to dedicate this edition to all children and the unique right they each deserve to have the freedom to simply be a happy kid despite parental circumstances.
Today, our resident kid expert Xavier shared one of his favorite 4th of July foods Flag on the Pole Kabobs that he enjoys making, sharing and most importantly eating. I don’t think they’ll last very long in your home but hey, making them with the kids is fun anyway. Here’s to wishing you a safe and happy Independence Day.
Flag on the Pole Kabobs
6 Bananas
1 pint of Blueberries
2 pints of Strawberries
Kabob Sticks (Ok dude, bamboo skewers)
Lemon Lime Sprite
Wash your hands first. Rinse strawberries, cutting off green part and slicing them in half or use the strawberry hull thing like my mom has. Put them to the side in a bowl (oh yeah, make sure to put some to the side to eat for yourself) . Rinse off the blueberries (and eat a couple while you’re working to keep your energy up, lol). Pour the sprite into a bowl. Slice the bananas (for little kids try the kids knife set) about a 1/2 inch thick and place them in with the sprite making sure to cover them to help prevent browning of bananas.
Start putting the fruit on the kabobs in this order. Strawberry, banana and then about 4 or 5 blueberries at the end. Continue this until you’ve used all the fruit up and arrange them standing up in a big bowl. Take the extra fruit and put in a small little dip type of cup and sit down in the middle of the bowl. You can even get a store bought fruit dip and put that in the little bowl instead if you want to.
