Poor Dot. One minute her daddy is just normal daddy with a big old lumberjack beard. Then he goes into what seems to be a very small room with no apparent exit, and a TOTALLY DIFFERENT DUDE with no beard comes out and calls himself “Dad”. I mean, what the heck?!
I had the same thing happen when I was around four. My dad showed up – it was either his birthday or Father’s Day – and my mom says to hug him when he comes in. But he had no mustache. I was NOT amused. In fact, I ran upstairs and refused to come out.
Dads, you gotta prepare the kids for the removal of your long time facial hair!
Here’s a photo of my dad and me around that time, for your viewing pleasure. And one of Dot. Maybe she’ll grow up and write about her dad’s trickery!
After 23 years wearing a full beard I decided to see the face beneath it. I was surprised to see my mother looking back at me in the mirror! Walking downstairs afterwards, I met my 12 year old daughter ascending the stairs. Startled, she demanded to know what I had done to my beard.
“I shave it off,” I said.
“Shave it back!” she exclaimed.
It appears I may have been hugging the dog a bit too tightly
I don’t know, may have been traumatic to see something falling off his face?
Why not let her participate by watching it be shaved vs. capturing the shock value moment & her crying? That was a little cruel and unnecessarily so.
I agree, that would have been ideal.
He may have been surprised that she was really sad and expected more confusion or surprise? Who knows.
That is so weird. The EXACT same thing happened to me when I was 3 or 4. I can’t stress the EXACT enough.
I never even mentioned it before; I didn’t see the point since-I assumed-no one could relate.
I can definitely relate …. My kids were in middle school when I shaved my beard. When I went to pick the kids up from school, my son walked right past me, even though I was calling his name and when my daughter saw me, she started crying. My wife wouldn’t kiss me until I grew it back.
