Are you good
at practical jokes?
I wish I was. My problem is that I’ll come up with a great idea, but I won’t go through with it when I realize it will actually require–ugh–effort. Which sucks, because some of my co-workers have some payback coming to them for an admittedly hilarious (and impromptu) prank they pulled on me one quiet Friday afternoon.
It all started when one of them texted me this photo:
There were two issues with this. The first is that the text came from someone who wasn’t in my contact list–so I had no idea who they were–and the second was that I had tweeted that some photo (without the redundant “punchline” at the bottom) the day before. So, I assumed someone I knew was sharing the photo with me to show me how it how been stupidly meme-ified, but I didn’t know who.
Because of this, I engaged in some witty banter before finally admitting I had no idea who I was engaging with.
And with this, the co-worker who had sent the text smelled blood in the water and decided to exploit this rare opportunity.
She created a fake name (which should have been my first clue, since she blanked and wrote the first thing she could think of–my name misspelled with an “a” at the end) and insisted on having met me at a restaurant I had eaten at a few months earlier. With this I assumed it was a wrong number, until the person on the other end posted an unflattering photo of me that had previously been posted on FB.
That’s when I officially started to freak out. And while I freaked out, the phone in use was passed around the office, so I could not see it in use. All became clear that I was being pranked when the next photo that appeared was of me in my cubicle, but it was only when one of the only people around who WASN’T in on it told me to call the number that the truth was officially revealed and laughter was heard all around (I was more relieved than anything else).
As is the custom in such events, I vowed revenge. And I want to make good on it at some point (later rather than sooner, since “best served cold” etc), but I’m not sure if I should just wait for the right opportunity (which may never come) or create my own (which would require a lot more effort).
Are you above such things? If not, what would you do in this situation? Have you been similarly pranked? How did you handle it?
Suggestions are most definitely welcome.
