Grilling in your own backyard is fine, but why not grill everywhere you go. The Elevate portable grill allows you to do just that. I’m a big fan of grilled food. I like the experience, the taste, and the ease of cleaning up after grilling. When I think portable grill I think of old school camp stoves. The Elevate grill is a far superior product and experience than anything I’ve seen on the market.
It starts with a great design. The grill folds up into one neat package and stores a small propane tank, a gas regulator and a grill tool to help you lift off the grill plates. You have to buy the propane tanks. They are sold at camping stores and Walmart. I bought two for $8. Elevate says an individual tank will run for an hour and a half. That should be plenty of time for even a long weekend of camping. You’ll also need a AAA battery to use for the electric starter. It’s billed as the largest portable grill (kind of like saying the shortest tall person). It’s portable and it’s large, but you wouldn’t want to carry it very far. It weighs in at around 24 lbs.
The plates are enamel coated which I think is one of the best non-stick surfaces around. The quality of the grill plates also accounts for the majority of the weight, so it’s a plus and a minus. The two grilling sides add a lot of versatility. You can have food cooking at two different temperatures at the same time. This is hard to do on the highest end home BBQ’s. It also allows you to separate meat and vegetables, for example. For me this is a killer feature as I don’t eat beef or pork, and my wife does. Now she can have her own side of the grill. There are pans underneath each grill plate that are removable and easy to clean.
This grill has a lot of uses. You can use it at home or take it with you. It’s perfect for tailgating or camping when you’re not going far from your car. It’s great for people with dietary restrictions. I can imagine a vegetarian bringing it with them when they are going to somebody else’s BBQ so they know they have a place to cook their own food. I’ve also been to BBQ’s where the grill has been too crowded and people are waiting for food. In these cases, how awesome would it be to break out an extra grill? Pretty awesome. It’s also great if your outdoor space at home is limited to a small patio or balcony.
For home users, I tried hooking it up to a larger propane tank with a $15 adapter hose. It works!!! Don’t try this without the included regulator.
It cooks great and fast. I found it helped to oil the grill plates before cooking to avoid food sticking. You can really get the heat going. Don’t go wandering off when cooking, as it does require your attention to cook at high heat. It took me years to come to the conclusion that I needed a portable grill, but now I’m glad I’ve come around. Check out my video review to get a better look at the grill in action.
