A lesson in perception, from an unexpected source.
At last Sunday’s Mass at St. Mark’s in Vienna, during the general intercessions and while everyone prayed for those who are suffering, I noticed my 6-year-old son Rafael drawing these hands (see attached photo).
I was moved, remembering how he was looking intently at Christ on the cross not too long ago and asking me difficult questions (“What is the Mystery of Faith, Da?”). Last year when we visited Padre Pio’s shrine in Barto, PA, he also asked me equally difficult questions about the stigmata–the strange, violent gift, given to the very few, of bearing Christ’s wounds.
Then he said, “Look, Da, I drew Iron Man’s hands.”
