Post Valentine’s Day, Teens Still Need to Learn About Love & Resiliency
–
During last month everyone is focused on love and Valentine’s Day. There is so much excitement about this special day to show love, but what do you do when your teen has experienced a breakup.
The pain that we feel when our relationship with someone we love is ended can be very intense as adults, but it can be even more intense for a teen that has just begun to experience these things. Teens may experience the same things adults feel such as sadness, crying, and feeling physical aches and pains in the heart and body when relationships end, however it may be more difficult for them to deal with.
If you are watching your teens go through these emotions and want to help them heal. Here are some steps you can use.
- Show respect and concern.
- Encourage them to talk when they are ready. Talking about the situation can help release some of the stress surrounding the break up.
- Use open-ended questions with your teen. This will give them the opportunity to elaborate on what’s going on with them.
- Do something fun with them. Ensure that you and your teen spend time together and they are able to get out the house rather than lay around their bedroom.
- Encourage them to get back into old hobbies or even start a new hobby. This can help take their mind off the break up and help them to focus on other things.
- Also encourage them to hang out with friends.
- Be realistic. Remind them on the strong possibilities of seeing their ex again. Let them know when they day it may seem strange but just keep the exchange short and polite; do not dwell on what once was.
Healing from a broken heart isn’t easy, but taking these steps will help make the process a little easier for your teen. It may also help build a stronger bond between the two of you because you have shown them you sincerely care and understand. Once they begin the healing process, they will be back to their normal selves within no time. If you find that you are having trouble reaching your teen send an email to [email protected] and I will be happy to assist in getting them through this difficult time.
