Dudeism might be a “religion” but the whole point is to know how to kick back let yourself be a “dude” instead of worrying about how to be a man.

“Life is short and complicated and nobody knows what to do about it. So don’t do anything about it. Just take it easy, man. Stop worrying so much whether you’ll make it into the finals. Kick back with some friends and some oat soda and whether you roll strikes or gutters, do your best to be true to yourself and others – that is to say, abide.” ~ Guiding Principle of Dudeism
What’s inspiring about a lazy, unemployed LA resident, bowling enthusiast, and White Russian aficionado who gets caught up in a ridiculous set of hijinks?
Well it inspired an entire religion. Dudeism. Yeah, you can become a Dudeist priest for free.
You don’t have to like to bowl, or even drink.
In fact, you don’t “have to” anything. Which is what is inspiring to me. As a guy, who has considered himself a man for several years now, I’m a bit jaded on all the requirements for true “manhood.”
I’m all about the freedom to define myself — that is what “Dudeism” offers. I can dress up in a suit and tie if it suits me, but I can laze around in a worn out plushy bathrobe and be just as acceptable. I can work my tush off, but I can also be lazy and not care if someone turns up their nose or snorts in disgust. And my tendency to order the prettiest cocktail on the menu need not raise one eyebrow — mine, or anyone else’s.
It is not purely a Dudeist life I seek, but “Intermittent Dudeism.”
With more “super-stimuli” than ever, navigating a world through the byzantine maze of the “tyranny of choices” and continually coming face to face with one edict for masculinity after another, I find it helpful to be reminded to seek out calming environments and just “kick back with some friends and some oat soda and whether you roll strikes or gutters, do your best to be true to yourself and others “once in a while.
I think it’s time we stopped treating the quest for masculinity like the quest for the holy grail and adopted a religion that encourages us all to just abide.
Amen, Dude. That’s why I got ordained as a Dudeist Priest. It’s the religion that doesn’t tell you what to do. Extra likes!
Dude!
