Yes I know you’re busy, but you still need to go vote.
Another Halloween has come and gone so you know what that means, it’s time to go out and vote! Okay, I know that this has been one of the more boring campaign seasons in recent memory, that American confidence in our political institutions are at an all-time low, and the media’s coverage of our politics is pretty cynical but that’s no reason not to go out and vote!
Please forgive the lame joke, because you, yes you, really should. And the reason is pretty simple: democracy is not an easy system of government. Instead it takes the work of millions, yes millions, of ordinary people to make our whole self-governing project work. From candidates who put their lives on hold to run for offices they might not even get elected to, to all the volunteers who work phones and go door to door it’s a huge project that never really ends.
And just like our democracy needs politicians and campaign workers to make the whole system work, it also needs tens of millions of voters who will tramp to the polls and vote as well. So you should stop reading this and go vote!
(If you don’t know where you vote, go here.)
